Macro photography – Hoverfly

Hoverfly

My favorite lens for macro photography is my 90mm Tamron f/2.8 and this picture was taken with that lens on my Pentax K5 in August this year. This is actually a crop from a larger image, but the resolution is good enough to still produce a good picture.

I’m not sure of the species of hoverfly, but I found it sitting on a flower in our back garden as I was searching for subjects one afternoon. I did a bit of post-processing in Lightroom (including cropping), adjusting the shadow detail, adding some noise reduction and some sharpening.

  1. [ Smiles ] A splendid photo of a fly!

  2. Very impressive. I like that you give some specifics about the gear you used and the Lightroom adjustments.

  3. Your hoverfly is Episyrphus balteatus – the marmalade fly. If you are interested in these flies there is an active UK Hoverflies Facebook page. Regards, Roger Morris, Organiser Hoverfly Recording Scheme. The Scheme would be glad to receive details of where and when this was seen.
